Maloney, PennDOT Discuss Controversial Route 662/73 Intersection

State Rep. David M. Maloney (R-Berks) recently met with Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) management, Oley Township supervisors and state Sen. Judy Schwank (D-Berks) on Friday, May 13 to discuss remedies for the site of a fatal traffic crash which took place last February.

“We listened to a review done by PennDOT district staff that identified possible short- and long-term improvements to the intersection of routes 662 and 73,” Maloney said. “I asked them to take a close look at the crash history of the area and bring us their ideas.”

On Feb. 9, the intersection was the scene of a traffic accident which took the life of Oley Valley High School student Marc McKently and left his sister and girlfriend injured. Maloney first met with PennDOT on Feb. 24 for an initial discussion of the event and public concern for the intersection.

“I also discussed with PennDOT the east intersection of routes 662 and 73, as well as the intersection of route 662 and Oley Turnpike Road, both of which are problem sites as well,” added Maloney. “The review was thorough and I appreciate the professionalism and effort taken to consider ways to avoid injury and loss of life there in the future.”

Maloney says a follow-up meeting will take place in early June and improvements at the intersection begin soon.

“If some good is to come from this tragedy, it will be the avoidance of similar incidents going forward,” Maloney commented. “Because of the McKently family and their friends, focus has been brought to this area and two other problem intersections in Oley Township.”
