Natural Gas Fee Pays for Berks County State Park Expansion, Maloney Says
HARRISBURG – French Creek State Park will be expanded as part of ecological and recreational improvements to the Schuykill Highlands, Rep. David Maloney (R-Berks) announced today.

“At its 10:30 a.m. meeting today, the Commonwealth Financing Authority approved a $150,000 grant for the Natural Lands Trust to purchase 54 acres in Union Township, which will become part of French Creek State Park,” Maloney said. “The funding for this project comes from the Act 13 impact fee on natural gas exploration in the Marcellus Shale formation, and I am very pleased that our community will benefit from this expansion of our natural areas to enjoy at no cost to taxpayers.”

The Horseshoe Trail will be re-routed as part of this project, and a new trailhead and parking lot will be built on the newly acquired parcel. The entire project cost is $636,900.
